# What is Glass

An open-source, Apple TV-style home screen for Fire TV and Android TV. A plain-text overview.

Glass is a launcher: the screen you see when you press Home. It takes its look and motion from Apple TV (frosted glass panels, soft focus lift, a top row of apps, folders, a featured shelf, Aerial screensaver videos) and runs on Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV. It is *Apple TV-style*, not a copy, and it is not affiliated with Apple, Amazon or Google.

It is written for weak hardware first. The reference device is a Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd gen), and the project measures frame times on it before it ships a visual change.

## What we are honest about

- **Tested on one device.** Other Fire TV, Android TV and Google TV devices should work, but nobody has verified that yet.
- **A launcher cannot be everything on Fire OS.** Fire's key policy keeps the Home button for itself, so without root Glass takes over by bouncing Amazon's launcher out of the way. The [no-root page](https://aazainkhan.github.io/glass-os/no-root/) says exactly what you get.
- **The deeper installs are only for people who want them.** Glass Pro (the rooted install) works today from source, on one stick; its one-zip release is coming soon. The full system install is in development.

## Ways to install

- [Install the app](https://aazainkhan.github.io/glass-os/install/app/): sideload and switch on one accessibility toggle.
- [Install + one command](https://aazainkhan.github.io/glass-os/install/app-plus-adb/): the reliable no-root setup.
- [Glass Pro (rooted install)](https://aazainkhan.github.io/glass-os/install/rooted/): four Magisk modules for rooted sticks. Works today from source (advanced); one-zip release coming soon.
- [Full system install](https://aazainkhan.github.io/glass-os/install/full-system/): a rebuilt system image. In development.

Every install guide has a matching, executable [runbook](https://aazainkhan.github.io/glass-os/agents/runbook/) for agents.
