What is Glass

Glass is a launcher: the screen you see when you press Home. It takes its look and motion from Apple TV (frosted glass panels, soft focus lift, a top row of apps, folders, a featured shelf, Aerial screensaver videos) and runs on Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV. It is Apple TV-style, not a copy, and it is not affiliated with Apple, Amazon or Google.

It is written for weak hardware first. The reference device is a Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd gen), and the project measures frame times on it before it ships a visual change.

  • Tested on one device. Other Fire TV, Android TV and Google TV devices should work, but nobody has verified that yet.
  • A launcher cannot be everything on Fire OS. Fire’s key policy keeps the Home button for itself, so without root Glass takes over by bouncing Amazon’s launcher out of the way. The no-root page says exactly what you get.
  • The deeper installs are only for people who want them. Glass Pro (the rooted install) works today from source, on one stick; its one-zip release is coming soon. The full system install is in development.

Every install guide has a matching, executable runbook for agents.
